Dexter's Open Case Files

Description of crime:Young girl bludgeoned toS02E07 Victimdeath poolside at her home.

Victim(s): 16 year old girl

Assigned officer(s): La Guerta, Doakes

Crime scene: The girl is lying next to the pool, wearing a yellow bikini, and there's a pool of blood around her head.

Suspect(s): Her step-father

Clue(s): The step-father had always had a bad relationship with the girl and were seen arguing that morning. He was home around the time of the bludgeoning. Opportunity and motive.

Blood evidence suggests: The evidence would suggest that Mr. Wilson didn't commit the crime, however Dexter doesn't let Doakes know that.

Add image of victimDescription of crime: Continued investigation of the "Bay Harbor Butcher"

New Breakthroughs: The Miami Herald Tribune received a 32-page manifesto from the Bay Harbor Butcher. Naturally, the police department scoured that document for any type of clue that could give them the BHB's identity. Dexter had actually crafted that document to be a sort of scatter-shot of all sort of different subjects, with the intention of leading the investigation down the wrong path. Lundy unfortunately caught on to that, and deduced that the Butcher may have some Law Enforcement background since he knew exactly what to say to confuse all the officers.

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS

Developments with Rita:

  • Dexter attends Cody's cultural report about Saudi Arabia alongside Rita and Astor. Rita looks lovingly at Dexter when he puts his arm around Astor.
  • Dexter disappoints Rita after he first promised to get ice cream with her and the kids and then bails when he hears Lila is in trouble.
Interactions with others:

  • Camilla comes to Dexter and tells him that Doakes is trying to dig up more information on Dexter's past, and that she can only stall him for so long. If it's discovered that Camilla destroyed police documents, she would be fired and lose all her benefits and be unable to financially support her sick husband.
  • Dexter sets Doakes up to look like a loose cannon. He purposely gives Doakes incorrect blood information, making Doakes spend a lot of time interrogating the wrong man. He then attacks Doakes in his office, and then casually walks out knowing Doakes will attack him back, making Dexter look like the victim. Doakes was suspended for this.
  • Deb confronts Dexter while he lays in bed after being with Lila. She scorns him for sleeping with a "skank" and abandoning Rita and her kids.
  • Dexter and Lila are becoming real cozy lately. He begins taking cues from her and becomes more aggressive to get what he wants, even when its at someone else's expense. They go out to dinner together and even break into somebody's house to have sex. When Dexter spends some time with Rita and her kids, Lila intentionally sets her apartment on fire, knowing Dexter would run to her and give her his attention.

SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE

A reference to a quote from the popular children's book Where the Wild Things Are. In the book, the main character's wish to be the king of an island full of monsters begins to become fulfilled when he imagines a forest growing in his room over night. In the episode, Lila gets her wish of being close to Dexter when she sets fire to her own apartment.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

Best Moments:

  • Deb opens up to Lundy and they share a sweet, innocent smooch on a park bench.
  • Rita stands up to her mom and tells her to move out of her house.
  • Lila sets her sculptures and part of her loft on fire after Dexter rejects her phone call. It is finally revealed that Lila is, in fact, a lunatic.
  • While Lundy's task force are arguing over the meaning of the Bay Harbor Butcher's Manifesto, Lundy stops everyone and suggests that the killer has been playing them all for fools.
Best Lines:

  • "I had to do a little creative problem solving at someone's expense" (Dexter to Lila, after intentionally framing someone to get Doakes in trouble).
  • "They're still playing my tune. It's like I'm conducting my final symphony- 'Requiem for Demonic Dexter'. And forming the entire brass section- Sgt. James Doakes. When I reach the end maybe I can lay to rest the monster formerly known as Dexter. Just hang in there Mr. Wilson" (Dexter, to himself).
  • "No matter what you try, no matter when, no matter how hard you work, I'll always be a step ahead of you for one simple reason. I own you." (Dexter, to Doakes).
  • "I'm a little confused. Lila is the one showing me how to take control, stop killing, get my life clean. But this is the first time since I went into recovery that I actually feel clean" (Dexter, to himself, while spending time with Rita and her kids).

EPISODE TRIVIA
Goofs:
  • Factual errors: Doakes would not legally be allowed to interrogate a suspect who had obtained legal counsel without that suspect's lawyer present.
  • When Dexter and Lila are at the restaurant Dexter goes to drink from his champagne glass then we see a different angle and he goes to drink from it again.
  • Outside Cody's elementary school, Dexter has the best parking spot right in front of entrance (what are the odds?), but he is CLEARLY parked in a red zone. He should've been ticketed.
  • Potential season five spoiler: Rita mentions that she has an Aunt Cecilia in this episode. This is something to keep in mind when Rita has a funeral in season five. Will this mystery aunt ever be shown, or even mentioned again?

I liked the sex scenes, I think they're nice, steamy and tastefully done. I just wish Dexter had made use of some condoms and Rita some birth control. They're not married and she has two kids already, what were they thinking? Dexter of all people should have been more careful!

This episode was a great step in the right direction. There was a very gratuitous sex scene in the beginning, and a not as graphic, but equally needless, sex scene further in the episode, but those aside, this episode made me happy. I was thrilled Lila's true colors were shown, and even MORE thrilled Dexter made the comment about feeling "clean" when he's with Rita and the kids. You go Dex! You know where you belong!

One of my favorite parts of the episode was when Deb caught Dexter in bed. What she said to him essentially captured what I wished I could've said to him. I liked Deb and Lundy kissing. It was good for them.

Oh, and wasn't the show down with Doakes intense? I wonder how that will pan out in the long run. I know Doakes is a real jerk, but I really like his character. I hope they don't kill him off or anything, however I can't imagine Doakes just dropping his whole obsession with Dexter any other way! I hope the writers know what they're doing.

I'm a little skeptical of Lundy thinking the Butcher is one of the cops because they still have five episodes left and I don't know how much closer they can get to Dexter without catching him, but they have five weeks to do it! However, the fact that they are getting that much closer to him is definitely going to keep me coming back for more next week (as if I wasn't going to already!).

Overall, it was a good episode for me. Anyone else think so? Any nay-sayers? Showtime's description of next week's episode gets me excited cause it looks like the old Dexter may be coming back in some form.

ps- Could someone explain the significance of the light bulb at the end? I know they commented on it earlier in the episode, but I didn't catch it all the way. Whatever it was, I think Dexter's starting to wise uip to Lla's psychotic behavior.
