EPISODE 6: "Return to Sender"

Episode 6: Return to Sender

Episode summary:Dexter struggles to keep in control when the still-unseen Ice Truck Killer leaves the dead body of Valerie Castillo, Dexter's most recent kill, at the auto yard, which puts Dexter in dangerous proximity to being discovered by his colleagues, which is worsened when a young Cuban boy is also found at the scene claiming to have seen who killed Mrs. Castillo. Dexter must stay one step ahead of his own friends by tampering with Vince Masuka, the medical coroner's, e-mails, then tries derailing Debra's suspicions to a copycat killing, and always half-expecting to be arrested. Lt. Laguerta tries to be compassionate to the little Cuban boy whom she tries to asks for a sketch of the man he saw. Meanwhile, Rita gets an unpleasant phone call from her abusive ex-husband, Paul, who has just gotten paroled from prison and wants to visit Rita on her daughter Astor's birthday. Dexter also recalls a row he had with his stepfather over including Debra in their hunting trips. Also, Doakes asks Debra to accompany him to dinner at his mother's house just to distract his overbearing mother and older sisters from meddling in his personal life.

Dexter's Open Case Files
Add image of victimDescription of crime:Dead woman posed in ritualistic style inside of derelict RV.

Victim(s):Valerie Castillo

Assigned officer(s):Sgt. Doakes, Debra Morgan

Crime scene:Jorge Castillo's scrapyard

Suspect(s):Jorge Castillo or a would-be Ice Truck Killer Copy Cat

Clue(s):Needle mark in neck led to traces of M-99 found in victim. Young boy locked in trunk of nearby car should have had an ID on the killer.

Blood spatter evidence suggests: Deep cuts along victims neck indicate the killer was in a hurry and afraid of getting caught (or so that's what Dexter led everyone to believe). Dexter planted blood evidence on a knife, which was found and used to convince the police department Jorge was the killer.

"Dexter: Early Cuts"
During season four of Dexter, Showtime ran an animated web series called 'Dexter: Early Cuts", which chronicled three of Dexter's earlier kills (ie: kills that happened before the start of the series) to exemplify, supposedly, how Dexter evolved as a killer. The three kills they outlined were the three kills that were only alluded to in this episode.

However, these web episodes unfortunately cannot be taken as canon for the show. According to the webisode's own fiction, the date Dexter first began taking blood slides from his victims was sometime in October of 2003 (Alex Timmons was suppose to be his first). However, in the Gene Marshall episode, it's revealed that THAT kill is suppose to take place in June of 1993.

In season one of the series (the only thing that really counts), before tossing his blood slides into the ocean, he looks at the blood slide from Gene Marshall. The one he supposedly didn't take if you believe the Early Cuts fiction.

(work in progress still. To be continued...)

FLASHBACKS

  • Young Debra wishes to go hunting with Harry and Dexter, and conjures up some convincing reasons why she should be able to. Harry denies her request, citing no real reason why, but confides in Dexter that what he and him do on those hunting trips, Debra must never know about.
  • Deb is caught shooting at some can targets with a gun she stole from Harry's cabinet. Harry scolds her and she blames Dexter for tattling on her.
  • Dexter tries to talk to Deb about getting her grounded, and Deb tells Dexter she wishes he never came into her life. She immediately apologizes for saying that. Dexter, perhaps unfeeling of what she told him, congratulates her on her excellent aim.
  • Dexter also has a strange dream in this episode where Harry and Valeria Castillo are both alive, and inside his apartment. Harry escorts the naked Castillo out, and suddenly Dexter is naked on his own kill table. Deb stands above him, takes a slide of his blood, offers him last words (to which Dexter has none), and then kills him as the Ice Truck Killer watches on.Dexter's nightmare
CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST

  • Thursday nights were pancake night at the Morgan family.

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS
Developments with Rita:

  • Dexter reassures Rita that no matter what happens, he'll stand by Rita's side and help her deal with whatever her husband Paul does.
Interactions with others:

  • Dexter helps Cody get rid of his dead goldfish. Cody isn't moved at all by the moment.
  • Dexter unsuccessfully tries to distract Masuka from the importance of the needle mark on Valerie Castillo's neck. He resorts to altering his personal e-mail to cover his tracks.
  • Debra gets upset with Dexter because he pans her killer's profile (which sounds a lot like Dexter).

SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE

This episode title refers to how at the end of the previous episode Dexter had dumped Valerie Castillo's body into the ocean, and somehow it seems the ocean had returned the body to Dexter (of course Dexter really knows the Ice Truck Killer did this to him). If a mailing address is not able to receive mail, the USPS will stamp "Return to Sender" on the mail, indicating to return the package to wherever it came from. Elvis Presley also had a hit song of the same name.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
Best Moments:

  • Dexter's bizarre dream.
  • The surprise of who was actually drawn by the sketch artist.
  • Dexter and Rita at Astor's birthday party.
  • La Guerta's attachment to Oscar, the abandoned boy in the scrap yard.\
  • La Guerta coming clean about why she dislikes Debra in the bathroom.
  • Debra and Doakes having dinner at Doake's mom's house with his family. Debra got along just fine with them.
Best Lines:

  • "Life is so fleeting. So fragile. Every breath the potential to be our last. We all grieve in our way. I prefer the six-year old approach. Yet another I've sent to a watery grave. Well, not quite". (Dexter to himself).
  • "This is how it ends? In the hands of a seven year old? I usually like kids". (Dexter to himself).
  • "Keeping the truth from those closest to you is how you'll survive. It'll protect them in case anything goes wrong". (Harry to young Dexter).
  • "Nothing lasts forever. Just ask a Ford Pinto. Eventually most serial killers get caught. There's really not much of a retirement plan. But it can't end like this. It's too soon. I'm not ready". (Dexter to himself).
  • I wonder in time if they'll even remember me. Other than the man who broke their mother's heart. I'll be breaking their's too. (Dexter to himself regarding Rita's kids).
  • "I shouldn't even be here. Rita will be devastated if I'm arrested. Her husband was a crack head and her boyfriend's a serial killer. It's kind of hard not to take that personally". (Dexter to himself)
  • "Deb will forgive me in time. That's who she is. Big hearted. Kind. Nothing like me". (Dexter to himself).
  • "I was wrong about birthdays. Maybe the reason to celebrate them is what they offer. The hope of living to see another one. The thing about Deb forgiving me- I better give her a few more days. I barely escaped getting caught this time. I realize my days are numbered. So I better make the most of them. All along I thought this was a game my alter-ego and I were playing. But relationships change. Evolve. And this one's getting deep. Like Harry said in my dream, 'Storm's on it's way". (Dexter to himself).

EPISODE TRIVIA
  • "Return to Sender" Is the name of an Elvis song.
  • Dexter's fake DEA license to obtain the M-99 Ethorpine Hydrochloride animal tranquilizer is registered to: Bateman, Patrick M.D. 2203 Blanchard Ave, Ft. • As Rita is pinning up a banner for Astor's birthday, one can see that the word "birthday" is misspelled as "birtday"
  • Although they are only one day apart from each other, Sergeant Doakes' stitches were on his head on the previous episode whilst are totally gone with only the faintest trace of a scar left.
  • On the previous episode, we can clearly see on the screen of Dexter's radar the deepness of the place he dumped Valerie Castillo's body was of 300 feet. Nevertheless, at the beginning of this episode when listing all the trouble the Ice Truck Killer had to bring the body back Dexter says he had to dive 100 feet to do it.
  • Dex kicks a hub cap in the salvage yard. Later in the episode, the hub cap is back on its original place.
