Episode summary:Dexter sees an advantage when the police determine that there is a copycat killer on the loose. The bad news is that unless they can locate and stop him, the FBI will take over the Bay Harbor Butcher case completely. He also learns that he was videotaped cleaning his boat at the marina. Since learning that his mother was actually a police informant working for his stepfather, Dexter has been questioning his foster father's motivation in taking him in. Rita's scheming mother suggests that Dexter's NA sponsor, Lila come to dinner. It all goes well but when Rita later learns that Lila accompanied Dexter on his recent road trip, she announces she never wants to see him again. Dexter and Lila find a new way to relieve Dexter's compulsive urges.

| Description of crime:Assault and attempted murder.
Victim(s):John Henry
Assigned officer(s): Agent Lundy, Debra Morgan, Angel Batista
Crime scene:Derelict train car.
Suspect(s):Ken Olson
Clue(s): Henry said that his attacker claimed to be the Bay Harbor Butcher. This brought this case to the attention of Lundy's task force. The crime scene was sloppy, which didn't fit the M.O. of the BHB. Olson becomes a suspect when a connection between his mother and John Henry is made.
Blood evidence suggests: None to examine.

Victim Name:Ken Olson
Age/Occupation: 32 years old/ unemployed
Where/how Dexter stalks victim: Dexter has to make sure that Lundy captures the BHB copy cat or he will hand over the entire BHB case to the FBI. Dexter breaks into Olson's house in an attempt to determine Olson's guilt in the crime. Olson comes home while Dexter is investigating. Dexter assaults him from behind.
Why victim deserves it: Olson admits to Dexter that he has killed others before attempting to kill John Henry. Dexter killed him just to display his body to the FBI, letting them know that the real BHB is still out there and doesn't appreciate copy cats.
Dexter's kill methods and rituals: His usual kill methods are in effect here. Dexter does not, however, take a drop of blood for his slide collection (perhaps because he claims he doesn't "need" to kill him).
Victim's last words: "Well I knew you weren't gonna kill me".
Location of killing: Same railroad car Olson assaulted Henry in.
Close calls/slip-ups: Dexter wasn't worried at all about trace evidence since he had spent the entire day before working in that same box car.
| | | FLASHBACKS
- The episode begins with Dexter listening to yet another audio recording of his mother and Harry speaking. Harry asks Laura to obtain some cocaine from the dealer so the police could get some hard evidence on him.
| CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST
- Dexter's mother whispers something inaudible into Harry's ear during the recording. Is it even important?
| DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS Developments with Rita:
- Dexter brings Lila over for dinner at Rita's house, and Rita surprisingly takes a liking to Lila.
- Rita hears a phone message for Dexter from Lila which leads her to believe Dexter and Lila were having an affair. Rita breaks up with Dexter on the spot.
- Rita decides to give Dexter a second chance and give him an opportunity to explain himself to her. Dexter explains everything well, even revealing to her that he watched his mother die. By this time, however, Dexter actually had had an affair with Lila, and when he told Rita that, she broke up with him officially.
| Interactions with others:
- The trigger is pulled on the whole "will they/ won't they" relationship between Dexter and Lila, and the two of them have sex. Dexter feels much better afterward.
- Doakes begins harassing Dexter again once he finds out that Dexter was never a drug addict. Dexter threatens to file a formal complaint against him to La Guerta.
- Deb is jealous when Lundy suddenly takes a liking to Dexter. She feels that she has been replaced as Lundy's "go-to girl" while Dexter fears that Lundy has seen the tape of him at the marina. In the end however, everything boiled down to Lundy being sick of hanging around Masuka.

| SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE |
| This episode title refers to Dexter's quest in this episode to erase the videotape evidence of him suspiciously checking his boat of all blood evidence that the police department unwittingly had. The title is a play on the title of the cult movie from the 90s, Sex, lies, and Videotape. |
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Best Moments:
- Dexter catching himself being compulsive with his camera as Lundy describes the BHB's compulsiveness.
| Best Lines:
- "My mother- confidential informant, and mumbler. Whatever sweet nothing she had to whisper I probably don't want to hear. It seems that my foster father and my biological mother were having an affair. It's bad enough I can't shake the visuals, but the questions... Did he blame himself for her death? Is that why he took me in? Did he love her, or was he just using her? Was he using me? I always thought Harry's code was on the spot creative problem solving, but maybe he planned for me to settle the score all along. It's times like this I wish I really were a drug addict" (Dexter to himself)
- "The full force of the FBI- that's the last thing I need. I've got to make sure Lundy gets his man. After I figure out a way to erase the marina files. And make up with my girlfriend. And then maybe I'll tackle world hunger because things really can't get much worse" (Dexter, to himself).
- "No I'm going to kill you. I have to. I just don't need to. It's very empowering" (Dexter, to Ken Olson).
- "There was a time I would've done anything to protect Rita. I would've even lied. But today I told the truth. Even though I knew she'd get hurt. Maybe I am leaving the old me behind" (Dexter, to himself).

EPISODE TRIVIA
- Dexter pulls a wall mounted fire alarm pull station as a diversion and then calmly pushes the actuator back in to cover it up. This is not possible with modern pull stations because once the lever is pulled out, the actuator on the station must be reset with a key to allow the fireman to determine which precise alarm was pulled. This also happens with the smoke detectors but in that case a LED remains on to signify which alarm triggered the fire panel.
- Goof: When Dexter and Lila have sex, it is raining outside. Cut to another scene taking place within the same lunch hour where Doakes is buying a hot dog,and there is absolutely no sign of rain to be seen.
