Episode summary:Dexter sets his sights on a new victim: a murderer so repulsive it seems only fitting that he's a used-car salesman. Dexter almost admires the man though for his smooth-talking charm and effortless lying, which Dexter knows he lacks himself these days. Dexter's been unable to lie to Rita about his midnight activities, which has her thinking that he's a drug addict. She's threatened to leave him if he doesn't commit to a 12-step program to deal with his supposed addiction. While in this recovery, though, Dexter meets a mysterious woman named Lila.

| Description of crime: Continued investigation of the "Bay Harbor Butcher"
New Breakthroughs: The station was swamped with the family members of every missing person in Miami in recent history. Although most ended up being dead-end leads, Deb comes up with the theory that perhaps the connection between all of the BHB's victims is that they all have criminal records. Lundy decides to look further into that theory.

Victim Name: Roger Hicks
Age/Occupation: Car salesman
Where/how Dexter stalks victim: At his car dealership, Gulf Shore Motors. Dexter initially goes just to do some research, not actually planning on killing Roger till the BHB investigation blew over. He had to visit twice to get DNA samples since the first time all he got was synthetic hair from Roger's wig (which proved to Dexter just how deeply routed this guy is in lying). Dexter decides to go through with the kill after talking to Lundy (of all people), who tells Dexter the only righteous kill is one that will save a life.
Why victim deserves it: Killed two women: Ann Cohen & Lynn Hall. Does credit checks via his job and preys on brunette, single women down on their luck. He rapes and then murders these women in their homes. He currently had another victim lined up.
Dexter's kill methods and rituals: Brings the victim down by strangling him with a wire line. Ritualistic cut on cheek is done prior to the victim waking up.
Victim's last words: "She's not worth it. You're better off without that ¢unt!" (this statement is directed towards Rita to which an enraged Dexter kills him on the spot)
Location of killing: Ann Cohen's home
Close calls/slip-ups: None.
| | | FLASHBACKS

| CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST
- Dexter was top of his class in medical school but traded it for blood spatter.
- Dexter keeps all his assets in cash.
- Dexter belongs to no organizations or alumni groups.
- Dexter studied martial arts (namely advanced Jiu-Jitsu).
| DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS Developments with Rita:

- Rita is in a state of unease when he sees Dexter's NA sponsor is Lila.
| Interactions with others:
- Doakes continues to tail Dexter, certain he is somehow connected to the Ice Truck Killer due to Dexter's sometimes off behavior. Doakes thinks he's figured Dexter out when he catches him giving a speech at NA. Doakes is able to sympathize with Dexter (for the moment).
- Lila becomes Dexter's NA sponsor after he convinces himself that she will be able to help him stop killing.
- The first official meeting takes place between Lundy and Dexter. Dexter introduces himself whilst standing in the tent with the bodies. Lundy replies, "I know who you are..."

| SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE |
| Dexter's lie to Rita that he has an addiction to heroin forces him to join Narcotics Anonymous, which inconveniences Dexter to no end. He also kills a used car salesmen, who is in a way a professional liar. |
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Best Moments:
- Doakes and Dexter's tense exchange outside the overflow tent.
- Dexter's tricking Doakes into thinking he is a serious drug addict. ("You owe me a new Michelin, you mother f^cker").
- Rita realizing her potential mistake in forcing Dexter into NA when she sees who his new sponsor is.
- Dexter and Lundy sort of bonding, although neither of them know they are.
| Best Lines:
- "Prints. Fiber. Trace Evidence. No, they won't find anything. I followed all of Harry's painstaking preventative measures. He knew that nothing stays buried forever. His code will protect me. Still I wish my own sister weren't hunting me. Makes for an awkward family dynamic" (Dexter, to himself).
- "I go to stalk a killer and I end up with a new car. How'd that happen?" (Dexter, to himself).
- "How many more bodies would there be had I not stopped those killers? I didn't do it to save lives but save lives I did. Motivation aside I think Harry and Lundy would agree on this one" (Dexter, to himself).
- "I'm Dexter. I’m not sure what I am. I just know there’s something dark in me. I hide it. Certainly don’t talk about it, but its there. Always. This Dark Passenger. And when he’s driving, I feel alive, half sick with the thrill of complete wrongness. I don’t fight him. I don’t want to. He’s all I’ve got. Nothing else could love me. Not even- especially not me. Or is that just a lie the Dark Passenger tells me? Because lately, there are these moments where I feel connected to something else. Someone. It’s like the mask is slipping and things, people that never mattered before are starting to matter. It scares the hell out of me" (Dexter, to his NA group).
| EPISODE TRIVIA
- You Make a Better Door Than a Window: At the end of the episode when Dexter is trying to show Rita who Lila is, Dexter waves at her, and when we cut to Lila, not only is she not looking at him, but she's completely obscured by someone else. Why would Dexter wave at this man's back?
- Result The Handbook: Unsure on proper NA protocol, however traditionally a sponsor is not allowed to be the opposite sex of their sponsee. Generally it is encouraged that a person find a sponsor with whom they can more easily relate to it. In Dexter's case, he would probably have been paired off with man who has had similar experiences to his own.
- See "Flashback" Section: In a first for the series, Dexter has a flashback to something that doesn't involve Harry. When remember why Roger Hicks deserves his knife, he recalls visiting scenes of Roger's crimes and taking mental notes.
