Episode summary: While Special Agent Lundy has doubts, Deputy Director Max Adams believes they've solved the case of the Bay Harbor Butcher, but Dexter might not yet be out of the woods.

Original air date: 12/16/2007

Directed by: Steve Shill

Dexter's Open Case Files
Add image of victimDescription of crime: The continued investigation of "The Bay Harbor Butcher".

New Developments: After having created a search grid, narrowing down the area where Doakes must be hiding, the police must put their search on hold when a certain cabin in the Everglades explodes and the fire department must be called in. Investigation of the crime scene reveals that Sgt. Doakes died in the explosion, and that he was with a diced up body at the time. It was concluded that the explosion was a suicide on Doakes' part. The Bay Harbor Butcher did not want to get caught so he felt "it's better to burn than get burned". The investigation closes.

Add image of victimDescription of crime: Multiple counts of attempted homicide and arson

Intended Victim(s): Dexter Morgan, Astor and Cody Bennet

First on scene:
Debra Morgan

Crime scene: Lila Tournay (aka Lila West)'s apartment

Suspect(s): Lila Tournay

Clue(s): The three witnesses can attest to exactly what happened in the apartment (although Dexter is the only one who really understands why).

Aftermath: Lila escaped the scene and fled the country, never to be heard from by anyone (except Dexter) again.

Add to Dexter's victim files
LilaVictim Name: Lila West a.k.a. Lila Tournay

Age/
Occupation: Artist

Where/how Dexter stalks victim: Dexter tries to trick Lila into thinking that he is still in love with her. He tells her to pack so they can skip town together. This plan backfires, and Lila kidnaps Astor and Cody to lure Dexter to her apartment. Once he is there, she proceeds to set the apartment on fire while locking the door to prevent Dexter and the kids from exiting. Lila flees to Paris. After surviving Lila's attempt on his life, it is unclear how exactly Dexter finds her whereabouts. He sneaks up on her while she is reading her mail.

Why victim deserves it: She not only killed Sgt. Doakes (which Dexter couldn't be too upset about since it saved his own life), but she attempted to kill him and Rita's kids. More selfishly of course, she knew Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher so he couldn't let that loose end go uncut.

Dexter's kill methods and rituals: Dexter does not use his traditional rituals, as he does not want this killing linked to anything with the "Bay Harbor Butcher", and also he's in Paris which obviously means he doesn't have the disposal resources he does back home. He does, however, show his victim a picture of the person whose life was taken, in this case Doakes' image was taped to a postcard, as a reminder why Dexter intends to take her life.

He uses a spinal epidural instead of his regular tranquilizer because he doesn't have time to tie her up and wait for her to wake from her sleep. This way, she becomes paralyzed and is conscious so she is able to appreciate exactly why Dexter intends to kill her. The downside is she won't be able to feel the pain when Dexter stabs her in the chest. He zips her corpse up in a body bag and leaves.

LilaVictim's last words: "Don't do this"

Dexter's last words to victim: "You taught me to accept what I am and to trust in the one thing I know with absolute clarity. Thank you."

Location of killing: Lila's apartment in Paris, France

Close calls/slip-ups: Dexter initially tried to kill Lila in Miami, but Deb interfered by showing up. It's assumed Dexter took all the proper precautions when he visited Paris.
DoakesVictim Name: James Doakes

Age/Occupation: (discharged) Police Sgt. with Miami Metro PD

Where/how Dexter stalks victim: Doakes actually stalked Dexter for this one! Talk about a reversal of fortune. After discovering Dexter's blood slides and then getting himself framed as the BHB, Doakes catches Dexter in the act of packing up a chopped up body. Doakes attempted to bring Dexter into the police station, but he was overwhelmed by Dexter's nimbleness and wound up locked in a cage.

Why victim deserves it: He doesn't. At all. At least not according to Harry's Code, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that think Doakes deserved death.

DoakesVictim's last words: "Fu¢k it!"

Location of killing: Cabin in the Everglades.

Hold up, now wait just one darn minute!: Okay, okay, so Dexter didn't kill Doakes. Not with his own hands. But Dexter did lock Doakes up in that cabin. And he did lead Lila to that cabin. And Dexter was racing to the cabin, trying to beat the FBI to Doakes, presumably to kill him so they FBI couldn't find him. Lila just did him a favor by killing him so Dexter didn't have to break his code.

FLASHBACKS

  • Harry asks a young Dexter what he remembers from before the Morgan's took him in. Harry tells him that he will have urges to kill and Dexter asks if he will be like that forever. Harry says "I'm afraid so".

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS
Developments with Rita:

  • Dexter and Rita secretly re-consummate their relationship, only to be barged in on by Astor and a pancake-craving Cody.

Interactions with others:

  • In a reversal of fortune, Deb ends up saving Dexter's life when Lila tries to kill him.
  • Dexter tries to save La Guerta from some serious emotional pain when she shows up to the crime scene and he stops her from seeing Sgt. Doakes' body.

SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE

This title refers to Lila's complete invasion into Dexter's life and privacy. She steals Dexter's dufflebag filled with kill tools and kidnaps Rita's kids and tries to kill them and Dexter in a giant fire. "The British Invasion" is also the name for the wave of British music that flooded the American pop culture in the early sixties, starting with the Beatles.

Best lines:

  • "When something beyond reason happens it turns skeptics into believers. Believers in a higher power. But what kind of power did this? Was it spontaneous combustion? Divine intervention? If you believe that god makes miracles you have to wonder if satan has a few up his sleeves. But when you don't believe in anything, who do you thank at a time like this?" (Dexter, to himself, regarding the cabin explosion).
  • "It's strange to have a creation out there. A deeply mutated version of yourself, running loose and screwing everything up. I wonder if this is how parents feel" (Dexter, to himself).
  • "Not long ago I had a dream that people could see me for what I am, and for a brief instant in time, the world actually saw my bodies of work. Some even cheered. But as it turns out, nobody mourns the wicked. Sorry James. I think Harry knew that from the start. That's why he gave me a code. It cost him his life but it kept me alive through incredible trials. The Code is mine now, and mine alone. So to are the relationships I cultivate. They're not just disguises anymore. I need them. Even if they make me vulnerable. My father might not approve but I'm not longer his disciple. I'm a master now. An idea transcended into life. And so this is my new path, which is a lot like my old one, only mine. To stay on that path I need to work harder, explore new rituals, evolve. Am I evil? Am I good? I'm done asking those questions. I don't have the answers. Does anyone?" (Dexter, to himself).

EPISODE TRIVIA

  • The final episode was leaked to the internet before being aired on Showtime.
  • Like a ghost: The police set up what was suppose to be a tight grid around the area of Jimenez's cabin, trying to catch Doakes. How was it that Lila was able to get in and out of the everglades without being caught by police at all?
  • You did all this when?: The time frame of this episode is a little fuzzy. Dexter stays at the burnt cabin until well into the morning, drives home home (which he said in the previous episode is two hours away), sleeps, wakes up, has breakfast, goes to Rita's (before the kids wake up) and sleeps with her, then goes to work and brings donuts, and this was all in the same morning. What kind of days are we dealing with here?
  • Dangling plot thread: Lila found Dexter's kill tools and freaked out about it. What did she do with those? She could've used that as very incriminating evidence against Dexter. Dexter didn't seem to care.
  • Cover those faces!: It's apparent that the actresses playing Doakes' family at his funeral are not the same actresses who played his family back in season one.
  • Is that you Miguel?: At the end of the episode, Deb and Angel are seen getting some type of medals (perhaps for their work on the Butcher case?) and the guy giving them the medals looks sort of like next season's Miguel Prado. It's obviously not Jimmy Smits, but who the character would be is a question. We know its not Captain Matthews, and in season one we saw the head District Attorney. Who is the mysterious man?
  • Identity Crisis: When La Guerta is seeking donations for Doakes' service, she tells people to "make donations out to me", but then later tells Deb to "make the check payable to cash". What kind of scam is she running here?

ZizzyB23 I was just a tiny bit disappointed by the finale (SPOILERS obviously). (page: 1 2) 29 Aug 2 2009, 4:40 PM EDT by RicemanDan

Just a tiny bit! Don't get me wrong, I liked the finale! But I did have a few minor grievances.

Firstly, I feel they really just dropped the ball with Angel and Lundy. Their characters basically just disappeared the episode. I know Lundy went to Oregon, but Deb (and more importantly the viewer) never got a chance to say goodbye. It just seemed to quick. And with Angel, I really don't know how he could have fit more than what he already did in this last episode, but I would've liked to see some extra scene somewhere.

My biggest problem was with the scene where Dexter killed Lila. It just wasn't satisfying. I hated Lila SO MUCH this season, and in this episode I finally got what I wanted... but I just didn't feel it. I was hoping for one last heart-to-heart between the two before he dispatched of her, but he just said like, two things and killed her. It didn't even seem personal for Dexter. Now granted, he was in Paris and couldn't have done exactly what he does when he kills at home, but I wanted to see Lila suffer before she died, and she really didn't. Her death scene must have last a minute tops. Now LAST seasons final death scene was satisfying. I need some banter before Dexter kills, you know?

I don't know if maybe I just watched it wrong, or what, but I couldn't help but feel a wee bit let down. If I can think of a more eloquent way to put it, I will, but surely someone out there on this wiki agrees with me right?

ps- I was also very let down that Dexter didn't take a slide of Lila's blood. It could have been number one in his new slide collection! Now when season three starts, the things gonna be half full already and we won't have any clue where they came from. (It makes me feel like a nerd to complain about that, but there it is).

Okay.
What happens, is dexter is having a hard time accepting the way harry made him, and talks to doakes about comming out. Therefore, starts to act as if he's given up, and feels calm. He asks deb to his house for steak and beer, and decides to tell her he's the BHB. But after a talk with her, he realizes that it's better just to accept the way he is, regaurdless if he's living code-less.
During dinner, Deb gets a call saying they're closing in on the cabin and has to go. Dexter just "cleans up" the dishes.
After Debrah leaves, dexter quickly speeds to the cabin, dodging traffic.
Meanwhile, Lila, who has stolen his GPS, tracks down the cabin and finds that Dokes is there and he tells her that Dexter's the BHB.
She gets upset that Dexter never told her this and quickly realizes how much she relates to dexter and drops the key to the cage and heads over to the stove, where she turns it on and also turns the gas on, and Blows the cabin to pieces, while doakes is inside.
The morning after, the whole team pre-discovers the body and have pretty good ideas what this cabin was for - Dokes's Killing Cabin, which leaves dexter Free!!
As he goes through internal conflicts with himself, he forgets about lila interfereing, and decides to call her and meet her at an aquarium, and they decide to run off together, leaving dexter to do what he pleases.
Dexter arrives at her apartment the next afternoon and as they get ready to go, Deb shows up and tells Lila "West" to leave, on an expired Visa.
So, dexter and deb leave, and dexter immediatly calls lila, who is under a bridge finding out dexters real plans after they left.
After lila finds out, she goes after Ritas children, drugging the babysitter with Dexters "Kill Serum" and takes the kids.
Dex shows up after a while calls deb, and tells her about the situation.
Dexter goes to Lila's house, who finds.....

In this episode, Lundy still doubts Doakes is the killer, but seems almost convinced about the possibility that it is him. Dexter has his hands full with Lila and Debra makes a choice about her future, but ends up being forced to make a different choice to save someone.
2 people die in this episode and it's not Lundy or Deb.
