Episode summary: After a long absence, the Ice Truck Killer creates a crime scene just for Dexter, which results in a flood of unwanted and disturbing memories. Deb's relationships with the most important men in her life become strained with Dexter's refusal to confide in her and Rudy's attempt to insinuate himself in her brother's life. Angel follows a blind lead in the ITK case directly to Rudy; LaGuerta gambles with her career when she goes against Capt. Matthews. Paul files assault charges against Rita and uses the system against her; after a deposition hearing, there is a real chance she could lose the kids ... unless Dexter intervenes.
Dexter, sent to investigate a blood-soaked crime scene, is gripped by a long-suppressed memory of childhood trauma. The physical sensations so overwhelm him that he has to excuse himself from the scene. Meanwhile, Rita is charged with assaulting Paul and could lose the children in a custody battle. But when Dexter finds out, he decides to take matters into his own hands to remove Paul from his and Rita's lives, but only temporarily. Debra has a falling out with Rudy over him spending more time bonding with Dexter then with her. She thinks that, once again, Dexter is being chosen over her. But deluded Debra is still too naive and neurotic to see Rudy for the person he really is. Angel investigates a hunch regarding the Ice Truck Killer when, during an evening out with the rowdy lab geek Vince Masuka, Angel has a run-in with a local prostitute with a prosthetic hand whose fingernail polish resembles one of the Ice Truck Killer victims'--this clue leads him back to Rudy. Also, Lt. Laguerta's feud with her superior, Captain Matthews, intensifies over their handling of the Ice Truck Killer case--he is more concerned about bad publicity, whereas she is interested in knowing all the clues in the case. | Description of crime: "A carnival of blood": Bloodbath in Room 103 at the Marina View Hotel
Victim(s): The blood from at least five previous Ice Truck Killer murders (women)
Assigned officer(s): Doakes, Debra
Crime scene: Room 103 at the Marina View Hotel. Room is soaked in blood. A radio station with the frequency of 103 is on the radio and Leviticus 10:3 is marked in the Bible.
Suspect(s): Ice Truck Killer
Clue(s): The footsteps of the culprit were traced around the room. Blood spatter patterns suggest that something was plugged into the wall socket when the crime happened.
Blood spatter evidence suggests: The blood was not coagulating:it was old blood. It was loaded with Coumadin (an anti-coagulant) and Heparin (a preservative). It was spattered against the wall with an electrical tool (probably an electrical chainsaw as Rudy suggested).
Killer calling card(s): None, but it was actually a bloody re-creation of the slaughter of Dexter's mother.

Assigned officer(s): None currently
Crime scene: Angel is stabbed in the parking garage of his apartment from behind.

FLASHBACKS
- Dexter flashes back several times on his mother's slaughter in a blood-soaked room with several other dead bodies. She keeps telling him to close his eyes. In the end of the episode, you hear her saying, "Dexter, Mommy loves you."
| CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST
- Dexter saw his mother brutally murdered in front of him.
- Deb brings up the fact that the last time Dexter had a panic attack like the one he had at the hotel was when Harry died.
-
| DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS Developments with Rita:
- Very supportive: helps get the kids ready for school, arranges for a locksmith, files a police report, arms her with pepper spray, gets her a lawyer, accompanies her to a hearing ...
- ... And injects Paul with heroin and calls the police: Paul is arrested for breaking Florida's Three-Strike Law and the charges against Rita are, of course, dismissed.
| Interactions with others:
- Deb tries to comfort Dexter after his "panic attack" at the crime scene, but Dexter assures her nothing is wrong.
- Deb is jealous of her brother's interaction with Rudy. She feels she deserves to be Dexter's listening ear.
- Rudy helps Dexter figure out what tool was used in the hotel room blood bath. He would of course know what instrument was used.
- Dexter knocks Paul out with a skillet, then drives him to his hotel room, shoots him up with heroin, and plants drugs and Paul's gun for the police to find.
- Doakes "reads" Dexter's mind.

| SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE |
| Someone is said to be "Seeing Red" when they are angry. There isn't really any anger per se in this episode, but the Ice Truck Killer does leave his bloodiest crime scene yet at a hotel, and when Dexter walks in and sees all of the red blood, he faints momentarily. |
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Best Moments:
- Dexter's unknowingly comic reaction after smacking Paul across the head with an iron frying pan.
- Dexter finally confronts the flashbacks of his mother's death.
- Dexter and Rudy acting like a couple of "normal" guys hanging out drinking beer and eating steak.
- Doakes actually displays three ranges of emotions in one episode: humorous, panicked and sympathetic.
- Angel's drunken ramblings about his ex-wife and Neil Diamond.
| Best Lines:
- "A jar of blood: dramatic, cryptic, playful. Could it be him?" (Dexter, to himself).
- "My sister's right. I don't share my problems with her. Or with anybody. Harry taught me that. Secrecy. Self-reliance. And a well stocked cupboard of Hefty-Bags. Fortunately I've never met a problem I couldn't manage- until that boy in the blood. He scares me. I want him to go away" (Dexter, to himself).
- "You've spent our entire lives keeping me at a distance ... Dexter, you are the only family I have and I barely know you. So if you're going to eat a couple of steaks after a rough day, if somebody's going to break through your walls, I think it should be me. I think I have earned it!" (Deb, to Dexter).
- "So this is doom: I've been the architect of it, so it's only fair I know what the fuss is all about. He left me this room for a reason: five women gave their blood -- their lives -- for this moment. There's only one way to find out why" (Dexter, to himself)
- "I prefer the enchanting Rita over the worried one. If I can find a way to make her ex-husband my problem, I can sleep much easier tonight. All I need is a little proof of his inner-monster. Harry would've insisted on that. Harry didn't believe in preemptive killing but maybe I can bend the rules just this once. After all, Harry wasn't perfect, he lied about my birth father. The trifecta. Weapons. Ammo. And impaired judgment. Throw in a little domestic violence and you have the perfect recipe for a family slaughter" (Dexter, to himself).
- "It is truly amazing the things you can do when you put your mind to it. No problem is insurmountable. Not when you have the most accessible evidence locker in Miami. Paul needed to go away, but death wasn't the answer. Life in prison will do just fine. For now at least the Code of Harry remains unbroken" (Dexter, to himself).
| EPISODE TRIVIA
- The beer Dexter drinks is "Jeckyl and Hyde."
Goofs: - Crew or equipment visible: After Dexter gets the jar of blood they cut to Debra getting out of a red car. The crane is clearly reflected in the rear windshield.
- Goof: When Deb and Doakes first arrive at the hotel, the reflection of the camera crane can be seen in the car's rear windshield.
- Crew or equipment visible: When Dexter returns to the hotel room, the steadicam spins around him and the shadow can be briefly seen on Dexter.
- Factual errors: Dexter says the mystery blood was "loaded with Coumadin and heparin," and Masuka explains, "One is an anticoagulant, the other is a preservative." Both are anticoagulants.
- Dexter is seen docking his boat by the water right outside of his apartment. Never again is he seen docking it there. In fact, in season two on, Dexter supposedly docks his boat exclusively at marinas.
- Dexter mentions Harry's first rule was "Don't get emotionally involved", which is fine except for earlier in the season Dexter asserts that Harry's first rule was "Be absolutely sure", and in season two, Harry's first rule becomes, "Don't get caught".
